GEA want Queenslanders to save up to $600 a year

Australia's peak body for downstream gaseous fuels, Gas Energy Australia, has called on all Parties and Independents to commit to gaseous fuels - to save hard working Queenslanders money on their power bills and provide a more independent and cleaner future for Queensland.
GEA's Chief Executive John Griffiths said their State Election Statement wasn't about asking the new Government to choose between gas or renewables - it was about making sure that the right energy and right technology co-existed to provide secure, affordable and low emission energy to all Queenslanders.
"Queensland families can save up to $600 per year on their electricity bills by converting their electric hot water systems to gas - provided the incoming Queensland Government includes gaseous fuels in 'green schemes' and energy concessions," said Mr Griffiths.
"The benefits of adopting this simple measure would not only reduce carbon emissions by up to 25 per cent, but every day Queenslanders could also save hundreds of dollars each and every year on their cost of living".
Gaseous fuels can also deliver reliable, cleaner power and goods to our offshore islands and regional/remote areas - and provide a flexible and rapid-response energy source for communities affected by natural disasters.
Mr Griffiths said the ALP's recent $1.73 million commitment to develop business cases for solar, wind and gas generation on islands near the Great Barrier Reef was a great start, but would only provide secure power if gas was part of the mix.
"The baseload power for these islands and remote communities currently relies on higher emitting and polluting diesel generators. Not only is diesel dirtier, but increasingly Australia is becoming dependent on foreign oil imports when there is a cleaner Australian alternative.
"Gas is the only currently viable alternative option for baseload power and in conjunction with renewables like solar and wind, these hybrid systems are ideal for off-grid power solutions".
Mr Griffiths said the recent blackouts in South Australia and the Tasmanian energy security crisis were even more examples of the need for greater energy security and why gas has an important role to play.
"Australian gaseous fuels are Queensland's natural advantage and have an important role to play in not only improving energy security - but reducing energy costs for Queenslanders, reducing emmissions and supporting both direct and indirect jobs in the industry and manufacturing jobs more broadly.
"That's why we are calling on all Parties and Independents to adopt these three simple key measures for the benefit of all Queenslanders".
