Gas can give South Australians a cleaner, cheaper and more secure energy future

Australia's peak body for downstream gaseous fuels, Gas Energy Australia, has called on all Parties and Independents to commit to gaseous fuels - to save hard working South Australians money on their power bills and provide a more independent and cleaner future for South Australia.
GEA's State Election Statement urges shifting the State's remote areas to gas generation, ensuring gaseous fuels have the same access to government support as other low emission technologies and supporting jobs from gas innovation, R&D and manufacturing.
Its Chief Executive John Griffiths said the Statement wasn't about asking the new Government to choose between gas or renewables - it was about making sure that the right energy and right technology co-existed to provide secure, affordable and low emission energy to all South Australians.
"South Australian families can save up to $600 per year on their electricity bills by converting their electric hot water systems to gas - provided the incoming South Australian Government includes gaseous fuels and products in the same interest free loans, rebates and energy concessions that apply to renewables," said Mr Griffiths.
"The benefits of adopting this simple measure would not only reduce carbon emissions by up to 25 per cent compared to traditional fuels, but every day South Australianss could also save hundreds of dollars each and every year on their cost of living".
Gaseous fuels can also deliver reliable, cleaner and cheaper power to South Australia's remote/offgrid areas. There is also a strong economic and energy security case to explore the value and risk mitigation of distributed energy options, including LPG and Liquified Natural Gas, in a large state like South Australia.
Mr Griffiths said the recent blackouts in South Australia and Victoria - and the Tasmanian energy security crisis - were clear examples of the need for greater energy security and why gas has an important role to play. These recent events highlighted the need for greater diversity of supply within South Australia and why lower polluting gas has an important role to play.
"Australian gaseous fuels are South Australia's natural advantage and have an important role to play in not only improving energy security - but reducing energy costs for South Australians, reducing emmissions and supporting both direct and indirect jobs in the industry and manufacturing jobs more broadly.
"That's why we are calling on all Parties and Independents to adopt these three simple key measures that form a package which would benefit all South Australians".
