GEA welcomes support for gas from Queensland Minister

Australia's peak body for the downstream gaseous fuels industry welcomed the comments from the Queensland Minister for State Development, Natural Resources and Mines on the important role gas will continue to play into the future as a cleaner and cheaper source of energy.
"As Minister Lynham has said, Queensland natural gas is much cheaper and has significantly less greenhouse emissions than other energy sources," Gas Energy Australia CEO John Griffiths said.
"The Minister has rightly pointed out that it is not a matter of renewables OR other lower emitting technologies, because gas can work with renewable energy sources."
"It is about ensuring the best lower emitting and lower polluting technology is available for each particular job."
"We also welcome the motion from the Quilpie Shire Council advocating on behalf of the domestic gas industry, which can continue to make a positive contribution to Queensland's energy needs."
Mr Griffths said while gas can play a bigger role in large-scale power generation, Queensland gaseous fuels in the form of Liquified petroleum gas (LPG), Liquified natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG), can also play a much bigger role in a range of applications including transport and distributed energy supply, especially in regional and remote areas. This would improve Queensland's energy security while reducing emissions significantly and underpinning a range of local jobs, thus enabling Queenslanders to benefit more from their own gas resources.
"There is a strong case for gaseous fuels as part of the transition to a lower carbon, lower polluting future, which have up to 25% lower carbon emissions and virtually no other toxins like NOx and SO2."
"Only gaseous fuels have the volumes, infrastructure and technological capacity to significantly displace higher polluting fuels across a wide range of uses. Because Queensland has a natural advantage in gaseous fuels, it can also support niche technical, design, construction and engineering as well as downstream manufacturing jobs."
"And the Bureau of Resource and Energy Economics has also noted that gaseous fuels have one of the lower long term costs of production of all the alternative fuels out to 2050."
"If we are genuinely serious about a lower emitting, lower polluting clean air agenda – that also supports Queensland's unique needs, opportunities and jobs – gas has to be part of the mix."
